During a January 2019 survey of online sellers in the United States, it was found that Etsy was the most popular marketplace with a total score of 6.59 on a 10-point scale. Results were based on four key areas – profitability, customer service, communication and ease of use, and sellers were also asked if they would recommend the marketplace as a selling venue. Global e-commerce platform Amazon ranked fifth.
Digital marketplaces are a popular online shopping option. While many brands and online retailers offer their products through their own websites and platforms, online marketplaces provide smaller businesses and micro-sellers with the means to sell their products without spending time and money maintaining their own selling platform. As of the fourth quarter of 2018, the most visited online marketplace in the United States was Amazon, which accounted for 56 percent of segment site visits.
Launched in 2005, Etsy is a New York-based online marketplace which expanded to several international markets in the early 2010s. In 2018, more than 2.1 million sellers sold goods through the Etsy ecosystem, up from 1.9 million in the previous year. In the first quarter of 2019, the platform’s global gross merchandise sales (GMS) amounted to 1.02 billion U.S. dollars. Some of the best-selling categories include stickers, hand-made kids clothing, jewellery, crafting materials and home décor.
